Remember the spirit of 88? Dole queues getting bigger, the Conservatives in power and class war on the streets. But at the same time, shining out of the gloom, came the birth of Acid House: one of the most significant cultural movements of the 20th Century For those of you too young to remember the first time round Jack to Phono presents Tea Street Band! Become acquanited because you’re going to want to know this band! In the past 6 months TSB have organized a series of pop up warehouse parties in their native Liverpool. These have featured DJs from the city’s famous venues such as Cream and Chibuku.Tea Street Band are a bastard mutilation that in its most extreme combines 808 State with Doves and the gang mentality of The Happy Mondays. The band have developed a remix and production relationship with fellow Liverpudlian Kooky Music. Kooky will be producing the second single on JTP. The TSB are playing The Kazimier on the 12th of October in Liverpool and The Grovsvenor in Brixton on the 20th October to launch the single…expect the video shortly!

Recent appearances at Liverpool Sound City and Hoxton have only boosted their live crudentials. They join fellow city dwellers Bird and The Seal Cub Clubbing Club onto London based Jack to Phono and represent an impressive musical sphere that Liverpool offers in 2012. Already making waves on BBC Introducing in Merseyside , Dave Monks is tipping TSB as one’s to watch.”I think we need to keep doing our own raves, keep playing to more people and spread the love.” say Timo Tierney, Nick Otaegui, James Albertina, Lee Smith, Dom Allen and Tony Carter in a recent interview. We look forward at JTP HQ to holding them to this promise! #PUSH THE FEELING ON

“Think of The Charlatans meeting The Chemical Brothers and lap up the finest cuppa that clubbers can come across”
John Earls, Daily Star

“Think of 808 state having a meeting mid channel to hear some French electronic by Space Disco You need to check these out soon – Come on were British we love a cuppa”
Dave Monks, BBC Introducing

“A glacial slab of guitar-led house that flies us to an Ibizan terrace for cocktails with The Whitest Boy Alive and Aeroplane. It’s really quite beautiful”
Neil Condron, High Voltage

“A shared love of rave culture is present in their output – it’s soaring, distinctly Balearic and sounds as much European as it is rooted in English rock and roll”
Peter Guy, Liverpool Echo

“Their unique sound consisting of straight forward rock n roll combined with heavy drum and bass, techno and House music creates a fusion that can only be described as euphoric; carrying everyone along on the wave of euphoria sweat was dripping everywhere as the five guys sent the crowd delirious. No words can describe the effect this band has on a crowd, and to witness it is magic in action.”
Gina Kershaw, ManGoneBlog

“After a scintillating recent performance at Liverpool Sound City, they’ve ardently begun to win over very man and his dog
Joshua Nevett, Bido Lito

Shadows EP- Bird out Today!

August 27, 2012 in Uncategorized

Bird release their second EP today on Jack to Phono. You can order it here .

Three piece Liverpool band Bird is the creation of Adele Emmas (singer, songwriter) Sian Williams (guitar, harmonies) and Alexis Samata (drums) Together they create dark, haunting, atmospheric music which will entice you in to their magical, other worldly universe. With beautiful, siren-esque vocals, tribal, hypnotic drum beats and spellbinding guitar work, Bird are refreshingly unlike anything that’s currently on the music scene. After bumping in to each other at a local gig one evening, Adele and Sian bonded over their mutual love for artists such as Leonard Cohen, Kate Bush, The Cocteau Twins, Warpaint, and Fleetwood Mac. The girls decided to swap numbers and soon after songwriter Adele and drummer Alexis invited Sian along for a ‘jam’ where they realized together they had something very special to give. The trio have since gone from strength to strength after signing to independent record label Jack To Phono on which they released their first EP ‘Phantoms‘ back in October of 2011. During their 2011 tour, alongside their sold out EP launch, the band have built up a large, loyal fan base in their home town of Liverpool and other areas of the UK. Now set to release their much anticipated second EP ‘Shadows‘ in August 2012. BBC Radio stations including Radio 1’s Rob Da Bank, BBC 6 Music’s Maconie and Radcliffe, BBC 6 Music’s Tom Robinson and Dave Monks at BBC Radio Merseyside have all been playing Bird on air for the past year. The band have also had their music featured on Channel 4 and have had various magazine articles published in NYLON magazine, Bido Lito and many more. After being especially selected by the BBC, last year Bird attended a musicians workshop at Abbey road and Maida Vale London where they got the chance to meet the likes of Jo Whiley, Steve Lamaq and Zane Lowe. Bird are set to have a big, long lasting career ahead of them.

“On a personal note, meeting Bird at Abbey Road was one of my highlights from the BBC Introducing Masterclass in January of this year”
Tom Robinson, 6 Music

“Adele’s vocal flooring jaws as Bird channel Warpaint through primetime 4ad”
Peter Guy, Liverpool Echo

“Bird don’t just deliver songs they bring us dark nursery rhyme like stories that have one foot in the conscious and the other foot firmly planted in the unconsious”
BBC Radio Merseyside Sess, BBC Liverpool Review

“Scores of new converts will surely want to see the creators of such beguling music live”
Richard Lewis, Bearded Magazine

“Bird are undoubtedly the most haunting 3 piece around”
Joe Mangone, ManGoneBlog

“Bird once again combine the hauntingly beautiful with the sinister”
Andy Von Pip, The Von Pip Musical Expre

“Other acts tonight will slam into their songs like they’re making pasta dough; Bird weave something sweeter and more sophisticated”
Nik Glover, The Double Negative

The following Monday on the 23rd of July sees the release of the Tom Eno Remix album…. Newsflash! Tom Eno reached number one in the Juno chart and his other project Mountain Folk featured on the Sound of Copenhagen Volume 9.

2012 has become a prolific year for British based guitarist Thomas Eno . Firstly his second album Jackknife was released in February to critical acclaim. Picking up plays on Radio 1,2 and 6 from the likes of Lamacq to Da Bank. His new project Mountain Folk with Danish producer Rene Kirkengaard is out in May. Mr Eno is no slouch, bubbling under his projects with Mr James Bright and Rene has been a host of remixes for a number of different artists. Some have been part of the Jack to Phono label others have been swaps with a number of European producers. Tom Eno Projects and works starts with fellow Hampshire muscian Polly Wood on their version of the JJ Cale classic Tijuana. Brighton based producer Black Grass gives us a hand with this one. The original of this track was chosen for a Hotel Costes compilation.

As well as Black Grass, contributions from German Jazz producers Dusty of Jazz & Milk, Renegades of Jazz and Mr Confuse all appear, along with Sunday Best producer Fear of Theydon. More remarkable than all of that is the sheer musical genre cross over of the Tom Eno remixes in the package. As well as the producers already mentioned Tom has taken on remix projects that encompass Indie to Folk to Hip Hop. He has worked with The Seal Cub Clubbing Club , award winning band and 6 music favourites from the Wirral and also BBC Introducing favourites Bird from Liverpool, remixing Indie and Folk. Mountain Folk on the Radio!

The work of UK-based Tom Eno and Denmark-based René Kirkegaard, collectively known as Mountain Folk, ‘Don’t Go Down There’ might be a bit of a slow-burner, but it’s definitely worth sticking with for the whole of its seven minutes and twelve seconds. Strangely hypnotic and effortlessly restrained, it’s no wonder that this track has been piquing the attention of the likes of Steve Lamacq and Rob Da Bank.” Tom Robinson (6 Music)

Mountain Folk Featured on Juno!

May 24, 2012 in Uncategorized

Mountain Folk aka Rene Kirkegaard and Tom Eno are featured right now on Juno where you can buy the new release Don’t go Down There as an exclusive!

Mountain Folk is a new project on Jack to Phono Records with Rene Kirkegaard and Tom Eno. Rene is a DJ/ Producer based in Aarhus , Denmark.

In 1997 Rene set up the record shop Dezigner Soundz which quickly became a focal point for vinyl crazy Aarhus DJs. It quickly established itself and had DJ Static running the hip hop section whilst Rene took care of electronica and house music. Rene and Tom were introduced in 2011 and started to fire ideas across the North Sea.

Tom has been busy recording acoustic material for his 2 studio albums to date and wanted to work on more electronic based project. He has recently received airplay from Steve Lamacq, Don Letts and Rob Da Bank. Once the track was finished Tom and Rene met for the second time in Wales and have recently started recording an album together. The project has been shared with Alastair Lee a film maker, he was so impressed by the track he used it in his recent film Moonflower. He was then also generous enough to release footage from Alaska for the video which will accompany the release. There are also 2 luminaries of the music world Ashley Beedle (Afrikanz on Marz) and Sundogs (Tactical Hots Records) who have remixed the track for the 12-inch release. The track has also been played on Danish National Radio in recent weeks. Tom makes his singing debut on the track and the mix of blend of the guitar style meeting Rene’s electronic world make the sound unique on JTP. An album will follow in the Autumn.
